What this tool does
This tool converts text into its hexadecimal character codes, and back again, with the result also shown in decimal, binary, and octal so you never have to convert the same text twice. Non-ASCII characters like emoji or accented letters are clearly flagged rather than silently mishandled.
How It Works
Every character in your text has an underlying Unicode code point, a number that identifies it. This tool reads each character's code point directly in your browser and writes it out in hexadecimal, padding each value to the nearest byte boundary (2, 4, 6, or 8 hex digits) depending on how large the code point is, and reverses the process by parsing a list of hex codes and rebuilding the matching characters with them.
Problems it solves
- Converting text into hex for a byte-level debugging session, firmware work, or protocol inspection without doing the conversion by hand.
- Turning a list of hex codes from a memory dump, log file, or old data file back into readable text.
- Checking whether a piece of text contains only standard ASCII characters before sending it to a system that does not support Unicode.
- Getting the same character codes in decimal, binary, or octal without re-typing the text into three different tools.
Frequently asked questions
›What is hexadecimal code, exactly?
Hexadecimal is base-16 numbering that uses the digits 0-9 and the letters A-F to represent values; a computer stores each character as a number (its Unicode code point), and that number written in base 16 is the hex code shown here, padded to the nearest byte boundary (2, 4, 6, or 8 hex digits).
›What happens if my text has emoji or accented letters?
Those characters fall outside the original 0-127 ASCII range, so this tool flags them and still converts them using their full Unicode code point in hex (for example, é is E9 and 😀 is 1F600), rather than silently dropping or mangling them; the warning tells you exactly which characters were outside standard ASCII.
›Can I convert hex codes back into text?
Yes, switch to the "Hex to Text" tab and paste a list of hex codes separated by spaces or new lines, with or without a "0x" prefix on each one; each code is converted back to its character and joined into the original text.
›Why does the output also show decimal, binary, and octal?
The same underlying character codes are often needed in more than one format depending on where you are pasting them, for example decimal for a quick lookup or binary for a low-level debugging session, so this tool computes all three alternate representations at once under "Also view as" instead of making you convert the same text multiple times.
›What happens if I paste an invalid hex code, like one with a G in it?
Hex digits can only be 0-9 and A-F, so any token containing another character (like a G) is rejected outright rather than silently truncated or misread; the tool tells you exactly which token could not be decoded.
