Hue rotates every color around the color wheel, for example turning a red sky orange or a blue sky purple, without changing how vivid or bright it is. Saturation controls how vivid or muted the colors are, at 0% the image becomes fully grayscale. Lightness scales how bright or dark the whole image is, at 0% the image becomes solid black.

Hue is a rotation applied uniformly to every pixel's position on the color wheel, so a red object and a green object both shift by the same number of degrees, they just land on different resulting colors since they started in different places. This is why a hue shift can turn a whole photo's color palette into something completely different while keeping the same shapes and brightness pattern.

Saturation values above 100% push already-colorful pixels even further toward pure, vivid color, which can look intentionally punchy for a limited boost but starts to look unnatural or posterized at higher settings, since real cameras rarely capture colors that saturated to begin with.

Lightness here is closer to a brightness scale than contrast, it doesn't stretch the tonal range around a midpoint the way contrast does. If you need to fix flat, washed-out midtones specifically without affecting saturation or hue, the Adjust Gamma Image tool is a better fit.

No, the image is only visually scaled down to fit the screen if it's large, but the HSL adjustment is applied and the file is exported at the image's full original resolution, so the downloaded PNG isn't a blurry, downscaled version.
