What this tool does
This tool automatically removes the background from an uploaded image using an on-device AI model, right in your browser. Upload a photo (or paste one straight from your clipboard), click "Remove Background," and the subject is cut out, ready to download.
Unlike most background removers, nothing is ever sent to a server, the AI model runs locally on your device using WebAssembly, so your photo stays completely private.
If the AI misses a spot, a Manual Touch-Up panel lets you fix the result yourself: an Erase brush to remove leftover background, and a Restore brush to bring back a part of your subject that was cut off. A Background panel then lets you keep it transparent, fill it with a solid color, or drop in your own custom background image.

›Is my image really never uploaded anywhere?
Correct, the background removal runs entirely on your own device using an AI model loaded into your browser. Your image never leaves your computer. The only network request involved is downloading the AI model itself the first time you use this tool, which is a generic model file, not your photo.
›Why does the first use take longer than later uses?
The first time you use this tool on a given device, your browser downloads a small (about 4.4MB) AI model. Your browser caches that file afterward, so every later use on the same device and browser skips the download and starts processing immediately.
›What kind of images work best?
This tool works best on photos with a clear, distinct subject, like a person, animal, or product, against a background that contrasts with it. Very cluttered scenes, subjects that blend into the background, or fine details like individual hair strands may not be cut out perfectly.
›Why does the result still have some background left, or cut off part of my subject?
The AI model makes its best guess at what's foreground versus background, it isn't perfect on every image. Use the Manual Touch-Up tools below the result to fix it yourself: the Erase brush removes any leftover background, and the Restore brush brings back any part of your subject that was cut off by mistake.
›How do the Erase and Restore tools work?
After removing the background, a Manual Touch-Up panel appears below the image. Erase and Restore are brushes you click and drag over the image, with an adjustable brush size, to manually hide or bring back specific spots. "Undo Last Stroke" reverts your most recent edit if you make a mistake.
›Can I replace the background instead of leaving it transparent?
Yes, once the background is removed, a Background panel lets you choose Transparent (the default), a Solid Color of your choice, or a Custom Image of your own that gets scaled to fill the frame. Whatever you pick updates live and is what gets baked into the downloaded file.
›Can I paste an image instead of uploading a file?
Yes, copy an image anywhere (a screenshot, an image from another site, a file manager) and paste it with Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on a Mac) while this page is open, no need to click the upload area first.
›Why is the download a PNG instead of a JPEG?
PNG supports transparency and JPEG doesn't. With a transparent or custom-image background, PNG preserves either the transparency or the exact pixels perfectly, unlike JPEG's lossy compression, so the file is always exported as a PNG regardless of which background option you choose.
