What this tool does

This tool calculates either the periodic payment a balance can support over a fixed duration, or how long a balance will last at a fixed payment amount, right in your browser, with a principal/interest breakdown and a year-by-year payout table.

Problems it solves

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between "Fix Length" and "Fix Payment"?

"Fix Length" answers "how much can I withdraw if I want this money to last exactly N years?" "Fix Payment" answers the opposite question, "how many years will this money last if I withdraw a specific amount each time?"

What does it mean if the money "lasts indefinitely"?

If your chosen payment is less than or equal to the interest or return the balance earns each period, the principal never actually shrinks, so the payouts could theoretically continue forever without depleting the balance.

What payout frequencies are supported?

Annually, semiannually, quarterly, monthly, semimonthly (twice a month), and biweekly (every two weeks). The interest rate is converted to match whichever frequency you choose.

Is this the same as this site's Annuity Calculator?

No, that one covers the accumulation phase, growing a balance through contributions. This one covers the opposite, the payout or decumulation phase, where an existing balance pays you back over time.

Does this account for taxes or fees on withdrawals?

No, it is a straightforward projection based only on the principal, rate, and payment or duration you enter. Taxes, fees, and irregular returns are not factored in.
