Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between this and an annuity payout calculator?

This calculator covers the accumulation phase, how a balance grows while you are contributing to it. A payout calculator covers the opposite phase, how a lump sum shrinks while it pays you a regular income, such as during retirement.

What is the difference between deposits at the start vs. end of the period?

If deposits happen at the start of each period (an "annuity due"), that money earns interest for the whole period. If they happen at the end (an "ordinary annuity"), that period's deposit has not earned any interest yet, so end-of-period deposits produce a slightly lower final balance for the same contribution amount.

How is the interest compounded?

Monthly. The annual growth rate is divided by 12 to get a monthly rate, which is applied to the balance every month, this is a common convention for savings and investment accounts.

When is the annual addition applied?

Once per year, timed the same way as your monthly deposits: at the start of the year if you chose "start of period," or at the end of the year if you chose "end of period."

Does this account for fees, taxes, or inflation?

No, it is a straightforward compound growth projection based only on the rate, contributions, and time you enter. Real returns are rarely perfectly steady, and fees, taxes, and inflation are not factored in.
